TURA CHRISTIAN HOSPITAL is one of the oldest hospital established by the American Baptist Missionaries in Northeast India. William Carrey in his Garo jungle Book described the Garos as "the victims of dirt, ignorance and superstitions." Malaria and Kala-azar, or 'Black Ever' were the commonest diseases among them. Leprosy was also found in some places. Despite high casualty rates there was little reprieve for the people of the Garo Hills in the form of government aid. The early missionaries, with little knowledge of medical
practice, helped the Garos as best they could for nearly 25 years with more concern than real medical knowledge. On every tour they undertook, they carried a supply of safe and useful medicines for those who wished to buy them.
